About

In Concert with the great NYC vocalist Kendra Shank

"Draa Hobbs plays in the tradition of classic jazz guitar,  but he has found his own voice. He's a player in the moment, creating  melodies and avoiding cliches. He has a warm dark sound and swings with  the best of them. I love playing with him."

BIO

I grew up in Chicago, but have made my home in Southern Vermont since 1980. I studied music with the legendary Jimmy Raney, Attila Zoller, Gene Bertoncini, and Peter Lietch. I have enjoyed an active life performing from NYC to Burlington, VT and Maine for the past 30 years. I have been most fortunate to perform in concerts and clubs with so many great musicians: Don Friedman, Ron McClure, Eliot Zigmund, Vic Juris, John Stowell, to mention just a few. I was both humbled and honored to record a duo track with Eugene Uman that was included in a Tribute CD on the German Enja label: "A Message To Attila". Other contributors to that CD were Peter Bernstein, John Abercrombie, Pat Metheny, Jim Hall, and others. That's a fairly heavy group of guitarists! (Unfortunately I had to make that recording with a broken wrist.)

    THE GRAFTON GUITAR GROUP

In 2015 I started the Grafton Guitar Group, dedicated to bringing together world-class guitarists with regional pro and semi-pro players in an intensive learning environment. Held twice yearly at the gorgeous Grafton Inn, past visiting guitarists have included Tom Lippincott from Miami-Dade College in Florida; NYC legend Vic Juris; West Coast guitarist John Stowell; and the great blues and jazz musician Paul Asbell. Coming in the Spring of 2018, Gilad Heckselman!

Contact me for more information - we welcome newcomers, and the Inn gives special rates for those who want to combine the class with a stay in a town USA Today and the Chicago Tribune list include it their "Top Ten Most Beautiful Places To Visit" in the United States !

Teaching has always been a strong passion.

In every lesson I teach, whether in person or via Skype, I combine thorough, in depth information tailored to each individual's needs with advice, stories from personal experience ("What works - and what doesn't"). Music is about communication, communication that does not take place through a video lesson or free YouTube "lesson". I am confident that people will eventually realize that there's something missing. My teachers inspired me. I hung out with them. I played with them. And most importantly, I learned from them - about everything. I do my best to carry on with the tradition of mentoring students. Several  students who came to me have gone on to become world class musicians, including a young Eric Krasno of "Soulive".

"It’s rare to find someone so passionate about music that it serves as both their spiritual nourishment and their unfettered gift to others, Draa Hobbs is one of those generous few.   A gifted performer, Draa is now one of the most respected guitarists and teachers in New England; his commitment to the music itself, his students and his own growth is extraordinary.     We are proud to count Draa as a valued member of our faculty."

Testimonials

"Draa Hobbs is a gifted teacher.  I am mostly self-taught, with some strengths and many weaknesses in my playing.   In my first lesson, Draa was able to immediately identify a half dozen areas of focus that  almost immediately helped to move my playing to a new level to a degree that demonstrates not only a true mastery of the instrument, but also a real commitment to the student's musical journey." Stephen D. Ellis, Lawyer and guitarist.

"Draa is an impressive guitarist with an vast knowledge of Jazz, Blues and related styles.  As a teacher, his experience with Jazz groups of various sizes and stylistic approaches, his unique solo guitar work, and his love of Blues, Rock and R & B music all make him an excellent resource for any student seeking to develop or deepen his or her relationship with music and the instrument."  NYC Jazz Guitarist Jason Ennis

"Draa Hobbs is a fantastic musician, but more importantly he is an exceptional teacher.  I attribute much of the current success I have with my instrument to my studies with him in college."  Zach Pearson, Jazz Guitarist with the Gypsy Jazz Trio 'Amerinouche'.

I have been a guitar derelict for nearly 30 years. 30 minutes with Draa was the push I needed to get off the plateau. Thumbs up. You will be hearing from me very soon."

Skype lessons are arranged for a mutually convenient time

FAQs

How much are lessons?
- Lessons range from $30 a half hour; to $45 for 45 minutes, and $50.00 an hour.
Skype lessons are a deal - $35.00 for an hour! Skype lessons include cusomized PDFs of each lesson, which contains both standard notation and TAB.
Do I need to be "advanced"?
Absolutely not! In fact I enjoy all levels, including beginners. I am particularly interested in young students who need to experience something besides sports! Sports are great and important. But our obsessive sports and "High Tech" culture has robbed many young people from developing their brains and creativity.
